I am thinking about buying a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Is this a good or a bad idea?

Go to the Public Library, get Consumer Reports issue on 2005 cars, and check it out. If the mechanics are warning you, there is a reason. Be careful. Personally, I will never buy another Chrysler product again. ( May not get the chance , anyway.)
 
do your homework. test drive some.
try consumerguide.com for reviews, recalls, etc.

jeeps are good SUV's but sadly are made by the Chrysler Corporation which means poor build quality and cheap materials.

if there properly maintained it should be a good car.

i had an 89 Cherokee that loved to eat belts and coolant hoses. just ask around.

if your looking for a good reliable SUV, try a Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Honda Pilot, or Toyota 4Runner.
