i am thinking about buying a 1990 2wd dodge dakota automatic transmission?

i am thinking about buying a 1990 2wd dodge dakota automatic transmission. from a dead stop shifts nice from first to second,then seems to drag out before going into third. but still seems strong. what would be the cause and remedy if anyone knows.
it is just a cheap truck am buying with a automatic transmission. and was wondering how to fix the problem.
