I am suprised they let someone say this word on countdown

Why are you in such a fuss about a programme that was broadcast over a year ago? There weren't any complaints reported then and I doubt that anyone would be so immature as to care about it now.
BTW: you should probably steer clear of the Barry McKenzie film when it's screened on TV (for the grown-ups, that's where Edna Everidge acheived "fame").

Let's not forget the time both contestants came up with "w*****s"!

It was only cut from transmission when the second contestant said they were just a couple of w*****s!

The word is indeed in the OED which makes clear it is derogatory and probably derives from the word ''puff'' in the sense of ''a boastful person''. W****r is also in the OED.I thought with Countdown on the odd occasion when they get an offensive word they stop recording and the contestant chooses another set of letters. We can all imagine words that might not be acceptable at 3.30 in the afternoon:eek:Clearly the producer did not deem this word offensive or unacceptable.
