I am suprised they let someone say this word on countdown

I think that's fine, it's a word game, she wasn't using it in a derogatory context.

I think for shows like these they should also allow swear words, it's mostly older people that watch these kind of shows anyway.

I saw another blooper on Countdown and when I first saw it I just assumed it aired, but I get the feeling I didn't which is a shame. Everyone's adults, everyone knows the word, everyone knows it's being used in a correct context, what's the big deal?

Really wish people would lighten up about swear words, it's really pathetic.

I wonder how many of those who complained were actually genuinely offended or were they being offended for people who probably aren't offended by it

Edit: Sorry, I thought the OP said people did phone up, but it was just speculation...

The contestant's introduction on the show mentioned that she lived with her female partner. The contestant was obviously not so sensitive to the word that she was prevented from uttering it.

The word is obviously in the dictionary and is therefore valid as far as the game is concerned.

People need to lighten up ! :)

I thought that the word "WAN**R" had been bleeped, but perhaps I am thinking of another occasion. :D
Wouldn't it have been a bit more tactful for him to have said "winker" or "hanker" which were both there ?

The same word cropped up once when Richard Digance was in Dictionary Corner and he caused a good bit of (intentional) hilarity by doing his best to avoid using the word. He dealt with the situation very well IMHO :D
