I am still looking for a new OS for my new media centre?

I have only ever used Windows but have heard of other OS, are the others any good?
Is Linux very differnet from Windows? Are there any compatability issues with software?
 
If you got cash go get mac. If you need a free OS go get linux (be specific on what distro to choose. I recommend Ubuntu.)
