I've been curently riding off road bikes for 6 years and Iam planning on trying out street.

See if your local dealer has demos - most do.

I'd try both, but keep in mind that the 695 is pretty restricted from the factory - a set of slip-ons, chip and airbox mod will gain another 20% more ponies.

I like the lighter weight and more 'fun' feel of the 695 - I'm never underpowered on my 620, but I don't ride with 'real' sportbikes - just sport-tourers like Honda VFR's. If you're gonna be playing with the big boys on Gixxers or Hayabusa's, your results may vary!

If you're used to the light weight and flickability of an off-road bike, you might have more fun starting with the 695 though - no matter who you're riding with.

Either way, they're both fast enough to get you in trouble with officer friendly - it just happens quicker with the 800!

They're both great bikes - have fun!

Addendum - in regards to reliability - the fuel injected models are all very reliable. You will have a more aggressive maintenance schedule than with a jap bike (plan on $400 every year for the 695 and about $600 a year for the 800 if you have the work done at the shop).

Oh, and the American bike? What would that be? A Goldwing that's assembled in the US? Or a harley that's assembled here with american and japanese parts?

There's no major manufacturer that makes a 100% American made bike - they're just ASSEMBLED here.

I love ducatis....first statement. Second get ready for MAJOR service bills (comparable to a car) if your not handy enough to do most of the servicing yourself. Most ducati shops charge 100+ dollars an hour. Second-test ride a ducati before you buy one. Because of the design the horsepower and torque are between a harley and a jap bike. You will NEVER beat a jap bike in a straight line race. All said and done I would opt for the 800. With the 600 you will get bored in a hurry, not a lot of ponies. Add a passenger and some gear and you got a snail. Good luck with you purchase-remember they are not as reliable as jap bikes (been stranded A LOT of time)-but when then do run they will put a smile on your face. Remeber to vote for a best answer.

your first mistake is not buying american... you will have no complaint when your job is shipped overseas like so many of your neighbors, fellow countrymen...
