think it may be 3 books in one novel.? There is a book i've heard of, that I'd like to read... Unfortunately no one seems to recall the title or author...

I'm hoping perhaps someone has read it and can tell me what it is...
It is either 3 books, or 3 books bound into one novel. I believe the author was female, but I am not positive. It is a sci fi/fantasy/fiction that features a race of people similar to ours... Only the people are all hermaphraditic/intersexed. Some are male leaning in gender expression, and some are female leaning in gender expression... But it is only the male leaning ones that are able to reproduce for some reason. So the female leaning ones have to chase the guys around to convince them to have babies...
An odd subject I know... But the way it was described to me makes it seem very fascinating. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?
