trailers available now, UK release date 4 Jan '08.

Based on the 1950's book of the same name but more akin to the '72 Heston film 'The Omega Man'

Brief plot synopsis spoilered in case anyone really doesn't want to know anything about this film.
Reset in New York Will Smith is Robert Neville the last man left alive after a virus seemingly wipes out mankind, and yet he is not alone.....
.

From what I can see it looks like a good hollywood popcorn blockbuster, it seems to have greatly upset fans of the original book but unfortunately you can't please everyone.

I saw a trailer for this at the cinema recently, I think it looks pretty good, but as I haven't read the book I don't really have any preconceptions.:)

Read the book a long time ago.....enjoyed it.....very bleak with a sobering ending.......Saw the Chuck Heston film years ago......bleak too but with Chuck doing his "granite-jaw-against-the-world" performance and the totally changed hopeful ending (Hollywood just hates those downbeat endings!) it bore just a passing resemblance to its source material......enjoyable all the same........As for the new version, well Will Smith is enough to set my alarm bells ringing and watching the trailer why do I get the feeling that the "end of the world" will be caused by "terrorists"? I'm not holding my breath for this to be something outstanding and I'll be gobsmacked if we don't get the regulation upbeat ending but........we'll see!

The first attempt, "The Last Man on Earth" made in 1963, is much closer to the book and quite scary but it's saddled with rubbish dubbing of the Italian cast members. Vincent Price is pretty good in it and it's beautifully shot.
Sadly, the copy that's used on tv is so poor that it doesn't do the movie justice.

For anyone who is interested,

The original source (ie the book) is available online here

The Vincent Price film 'The last man on Earth' based on I Am Legend is available (since its in the public domain) on Google Video it is however not the best print but still watchable.

Obviously if you don't want to know anything about how the Will Smith version might play out its advisable you don't look at either just in case they ruin the surprise.
