I Am Legend: Invasion of the Point Missers.

Could it be that no one connected with this movie has actually read Richard Matheson's novel?
The undeniable technical sophistication of this misfire is completely undermined by its frequent descents into action movie cliches (as in "The Omega Man") and a total dismissal of Matheson's ideas: the infected are not just a bunch of random zombies, they are Neville's frienRAB and neighbours, they are self-aware and functional, genuinely believing themselves to be undead and that the definition of a monster is dependent on context and point of view.
Will Smith does very well but the script requires his character to behave like a total dumbass so often that it's just plain irritating: why does he hunt deer by driving through them like a lunatic? He's a soldier but is a worse shot than a Death Star Stormtrooper, he can't drive at any speed less than Mach 3 and stays in a dangerous city instead of legging it to the countryside which appears to be deserted.
The ludicrously predictable ending is the exact opposite of the novel: Neville fails to realise that a world exists which no longer has a place for him and that his trigger-happy lifestyle has been his undoing.
This is not complicated stuff and for what these guys get paid, they might've found some way of incorporating it.

As it stanRAB "The Last Man on Earth", although far from perfect, is still the best version of the story.

I've got the talking book on mp3. It's the only version of the story I know; I haven't seen the 2 earlier films. I'm not expecting this new one to be anything like the book - just a remake of all the living dead and 28 days movies.
But by using the title "I Am Legend" it must surely keep to the basic point of the book... yes?... no?

You'd think so wouldn't you?
The Vincent Price version is the closest to the book but it's scuppered by a foreign cast badly dubbed with US accents. Although many Italian movies are routinely dubbed (badly) even when the cast are speaking Italian, it's really noticeable in "The Last Man on Earth" although there's a lot of narration from Vincent Price which alleviates it a bit.
The use of the title "I Am Legend" in the current offering is criminally misleading, hence the title of this thread.
Perhaps Will Smith didn't want to be in anything too downbeat.:)

A similar thing to what happened with Blade Runner then? The studio didn't want their star Harrison Ford to appear to be anything less than a hero. Thank goodness Ridley Scott got the proper version released eventually.

Actually, I think it's on BBC7 at the moment. I'll just check. BRB.

Damn!
Sorry CG, only episodes 7, 8 and 9 are still available on Listen Again.
But don't worry; they repeat stuff fairly regularly.

They are both based of the same novel.

I can't see it flopping having made $170 million (Cost $150 million) worldwide so far and there are 17 countries still to release the film in January as well as the UK and 3 other countries releasing the film today.

OMG I'd forgotten some of his Turkeys ! thanks for the complete list :D

I only watch movies that do well at the box office, so I'll be watching Titanic and Shrek 2 tonight, both are classics ;):p

PS I don't dislike Will, I still love the Fresh Prince :o

In what way is completely removing the heart and core of the story "updating"? It not a bad film in and of itself, but it has almost nothing in common with the book. The only issue I have with the film at all is the title - which is frankly misleading.

Its less than 90mins(Pal version not US) and its still boring, I wont give anything away but the best action scenes in the film everyone has already seen in the trailer, Im not saying its the worse film ever made but its nothing special

I have just finished watching the film and I must say it was completely pants. How do I get 1 hours 30 minutes of my life back?

  • Plotholes galore
  • So many cliches
  • The film was far too short
  • Over the top CGI
  • Poor man's 28 Days Later

Do we have all night? :D

4/10.
