I own a 1984 toyota tercel hatch back. It has a carburetor and a distributor. I am having problems getting it to stay running. It will turn over and run for about 4mins then is coughs, spits and then dies. I am attempting to move the distributor holding bolt and see if moving the distributor will help me along. Is there something that I am missing here? It has all new components brakes, cv joint, valves, timing belt, spark plugs, radiator. That is just to name a few. I must be minutes away from having this gas miser running in top form. Help!!

does this car restart right away? or does it have to sit for awhile then restart? you need to determine if it is spark related or fuel related . if it doesn't restart right away try some spray starting fluid to see if it tries to restart. if it does then you most likely have either a blocked fuel filter or a fuel pump going bad. if it has to sit and cool down then restart it is probably ignition related ( coil, ignition module, cracked distributor cap)

First of all, DO NOT move the distributor - that will change the engine timing. To do that, you need the specs and a timing light Has the carb been overhauled ?? There are kits avail to do yourself or get a rebuilt carb. The fuel filter(s) may need replacing also - one at the base of the carb and (sometimes) one at the fuel tank
