I am having a headset problem with two players on Xbox Live on Halo 3. Any HELP?

Well, my cousin brought Halo 3 to my house so we can play Xbox Live together, he brought his headset too. We both played Xbox Live and we plugged in our headsets and Player 1 (Mine) worked and it showed the attenae with signal picture on the bottom for me, and he was Player 2 and he had a cancel sign on it on the bottom, but somehow his didn't work. Everything was on. (He used Guest mode). Any help or tips to this problem. I will choose the best answer.

Also, I have another question. He brought Halo 3 to my house, and we played Xbox Live together, but we couldn't play the other types of Xbox Live. We only had Basic Training, and it said we needed more maps to play the other types or something. Please help, I will be thankful and happy! I WILL CHOOSE THE BEST ANSWER! Thanks.
 
Only one person on the Xbox may use the mic at a time.

The reason it was basic training is because he did not plug his hard drive into your Xbox, so none of his memory is there. Tell him to bring his hard drive next time.
