I am on my dads health plan Tri-care (army healthy care I am guessing because its on a army base and my dad used to be in the army)
My mom and I are going to go talk to my doctor about gastric bypass because I weight 334lbs and I am only 17 and 5'5, and my weight is beyond self help.
So what should I ask and say to my doctor about the surgery?
Please dont tell me all this about exercising because i have tried it all ever since I was 4 years old and started to get over weight and nothing has helped!
I have been on so many plans that past doctors have given me that's why my doctor want to talk it over with my mom and I about the surgery!
Nothing has worked for me! I dont plan on drinking ever I don't like the taste of alcohol neither does my mom so it runs in the family I guess!
But being fat runs in my family but im obese and that's why im am getting the surgery, because im not over weight form eating allot because its mostly genetics!

I think you should get the doctor to refer you to a nurtitionist. You need a good diet and exercise plan under the care of a doctor. You are too young to be getting this surgery. Bariatric surgeries are not without complications.

And yes, you would just directly ask the doctor about gastric bypass. He will tell you if you are a canidate or not.

wow, thats really big....um yea i tried to get surgery but they referred me to a nutritionist. I suggest you do the same before surgery. Trust me kiddo, after i researched on the surgery you get scared. After having the surgery you won't be able to drink liquor.... which means you'll be clean for life...how fun :), but seriously if you don't mind not drinking when your 21 than i'm all for it. But i would rather no surgery and try to lose it on my own. I was always depressed when i couldn't lose weight but it just happens over time. and maybe you've been trying it all your life, but you need a right excersice and a right diet.

I understand all the people saying that you're too young but they must understand how fast you had to mature in your life... from a young age you must have been calorie counting and dieting instead of enjoying your childhood...

I had a fundoplication when I was five months old (this is going on eighteen years ago now) because I had chronic reflux... to this day I can't vomit so you'll have to check out all the possible health issues that are assosicated because if I get too sick they have to give me injections and on occasions have used a nasal gastric tube (a tube that goes through your nose to your stomache, and that is not fun)

I hope all goes well

Ask ANY questions you may have, even if they feel silly. Even consider having your mother record it on a hand-held device, because it is easy to forget some of the stuff he will say.

Are you too young?
What do you need to do before the surgery?
What are the risks? Death? Trouble having children? Nutritional risk?
Will Tri-care cover the procedure AND after care 100%?
Who will perform the surgery? Is it possible to get a referral to an outside surgeon who specializes in bariatrics?
Are there alternatives? Lap-band, etc.?
How long is the recovery process?
How long do you have to stay in the hospital?
How much weight do you have to LOSE before the surgery to qualify?
Are you really beyond natural weight loss?
How much will the plastic surgery cost on Tri-care to have the excess skin removed?
Can you please be referred to a dietitian?
Can the doctor prescribe a healthy exercise program for you to get started on?

Well if your mom is going with you she probably has ideas of what to say already, but I guess you should just tell the doctor how you've tried exercise and you want to be at a healthy weight and that you're going to make a plan to eat healthier and be more active. He's a doctor and if he thinks you're a good candidate for it you'll probably get it. Good luck and God bless!!! :)
