We are both on vodafone and wondering how we can talk without is costing an absolute fortune!

Use Skype (completely free as long as you aren't calling someone's phone). A computer with internet access and a microphone is required for both people.

Alternatively, you could find a carrier with cheap international calling, or just send text messages. You could also look into getting disposable phones (also known as "prepaid phones").
