I camp with dogs. So, this is what your going to do.
First, If you can, borrow a xpen (exercise pen) from someone or if you plan on going camping on a more regular basis, buy one. Make sure it's tall enough that he can not jump out.
I usually put the pen around the front of my tent. I use bungi cords to secure the xpen to the tent. This way, when I open the tent, the dog isn't just running free, but enters the pen. Also, buy a 15/20 foot long line, you can pick one up in any pet supply store. So if you need to, you can tie him to a tree.
There is no reason the dog can't sleep with you in your tent. Make sure the zippers are closed well, so the dog can't nose its way out. I did have a dog do that once. I'm sure you can aways borrow a crate from someone, he can sleep in that inside the tent if your concerned about him getting out.
Next make sure the campsite you choose permits dogs. Some do, some do not. In the places that do allow dogs, the general rule is all dogs must be on leash. Besides, you don't want your dog running after an animal and getting lost, so he needs to be on leash at all time.
Bring plenty of fresh water, enough food and water +for your trip there, your stay and your trip back. Bring an emergency kit. Also, a tweezer always comes in handy. I also always bring along with me, copies of my dogs rabies vaccines, just in case. It can never hurt to have them on hand. A portable water bowl also comes in handy. Also, take a current picture of your dog with you, just in case he does get lost and you need to post signs up.
If your hiking during the day with your dog, I have no doubt that he'll sleep well at night.
Do not, under any circumstances, leave him unsupervised.
That's a long drive for just a weekend.
