I am applying for the job listed below and I would like to know how to create 3-d models. The art part I can do it's just the computer stuff I am confused about.

3d solid modeler/artist – independent contractor work

Custom manufacturer producing variety of molded products looking for experienced 3d modeler. These are primarily Playground Sculptures, requiring a balance between aesthetics, functionality, and ease of production. Sculptures range from realistic animal shapes, to themed elements, to fantasy creatures.

Responsibilities will include:
• Create or source digital models based on client demand or marketing strategy
• Create compelling visual documentation to help sell projects
• Develop mold design based on digital model
• Ensuring quality and integrity of the artistic vision from inception to completion

Required Skills/Experience:
• 3d digital modeling ability and tools
• Ability to communicate artistic vision
• Demonstrated experience taking a project from inception to completion

This will be contract work on specific projects, using your own equipment and software.

If you have had no experience with Autodesks CAD and animation -- 3DStudioMax and Maya3D in the latter case -- forget it.

Beyond that, of course, conventional sculpting and 3D design is absolutely necessary (you have created molds and maquettes haven't you?).

If you've never done all of this, I would say, 1. Download Blender. While you learn how to use it look for a trial version of one of Autodesk's packages. Look for Youtube tutorials on both. Make ANYTHING using Blender. You will figure out how. Buy about 30 pounds of Plastilena di Roma (roughly 25 bucks) some pipes wire and a board from the hardware store and sculpting tools are helpful but a butter knife is sufficient. Make a model about two feet tall of what you just sculpted. Now for the big expense: go to the craft store and buy latex. You will learn how to make a latex mold. Rest assured. When you have it cast it -- and document everything with a digital camera. In other words, make a maquette you designed with Blender.

If you have other good recommendations that is all you would generally need to sell yourself.
