I am a victim of someone who's now in jail. Can I contact her legally?

Can I write her? She might go to prison after sentencing. Can I write her when she's in prison? There's no restraining order or anything and I was never told I couldn't, so I'm curious if it's legal. I hear different stories. Is there any law forbidding this? If so, please cite it.
