Hypothyroidism in both parents pre-pregnancy?

I was originally diagnosed when I was 14 with Hypothyroidism. Being a rebellious teenager I refused to take my meds, and my doctor moved away. After finally realizing that it really is important to take the meds, and the years it has taken to get a doctor to take me seriously and re-diagnose me with hypothyroidism, I am now happily back on meds and doing much better.

My husband will be tested for hypothyroidism in about a month, it runs in his family. (His mom was hyper, then went to hypo after radiation, and his sister has hypo) So more then likely he has it, and he has a lot of the symptoms I have had.

So I am wondering how much it can effect fertility in both the man and the woman, how pregnancy is as far as complications go, or if we should not try to get pregnant as I do not want to bring a baby into the world with complications because I was selfish. Also, I know that more then likely a child would have hypothyroidism, but would that have to be monitored from birth? Or later on when symptoms show up?
