Hypoglycemia

I would like to know what the typical blood sugar levels are of a hypoglycemic individual.

My blood levels never change. Is that normal? I was 61 mg/dL when I woke up. Ate breakfast, went to 97mg/dL. One hour later was at 99mg/dL. Before lunch I was 89mg/dL. And an hour after lunch I was 93mg/dL.

Does that seem normal at all? I have all the hypoglycemic symptoms. My family's convinced I am. But the blood test, the ONE blood test my doctor gave me after a 6 hour fasting came back as 71 mg/dL. So he said I was normal.

I've never once seen my blood sugar break 100. Even after a slurpee and a chocolate bar.

I need some help. Is it normal for blood levels to stay the same throughout the day?

Hi, Allee Toler . . . I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia at age 16 and am 51 now, controlled strictly by diet.

My morning fasting blood sugars tend to run 70 to 80. Stress can make it go lower, like your 61. I am sure the doctor took that into account.

You should be happy that your blood sugars are staying pretty consistent with what you eat because that means you are controlling it by diet if that is what you have.

If you get a very bad period where you are extremely weak, shaky and feeling off balance (some people even break out in a sweat on their scalp), you should measure your blood sugar then. I have been in that state and it usually comes in at the 30 to 40 level.

If you are getting these types of symptoms, you should eat something with protein in it such as cheese or nuts. These will metabolize slowly in your system and keep your blood sugar at a steady level for a longer period of time than carbohydrates. Some form of protein should also be included with each meal. Eat small meals several times a day.

I hope this has helped. Feel better soon!

My symptoms are generally predictable but do not fit specific time frames. The only time I have gotten headaches are from going too long past my normal eating time, or if I have allergies or a viral thing going.

Irritability is normal with headaches and low blood sugar. The thing that is puzzling me is the exact times you get this and that eating something only helps you for an hour. I have never had rolling back of the eyes and am wondering if this is some type of seizure activity.

I would go seek a second opinion if your doctor says everything is okay because what you are going through is not okay.

Other possibilities I can come up with might be hormone related, thyroid, migraine or even a seizure disorder. Please do get checked by someone who seems to be more knowledgeable in what to do to evaluate you.

Let me know how it goes!

The problem that I'm continuing to have is that I experiance the symptoms, even when I'm around 90mg/dL. They're almost constant. What could be causing these consistant symptoms? Could it be that I've had it so long and haven't treated it properly? I don't follow any specific diet. It's more of a guess and eat.

The things that bring on the symptoms for me are when I get anxious, have waited too long to eat between meals, or excessive physical activity (anything that makes you tired or even out of breath). You might want to keep a diary of your symptoms and what you were doing or what distressing thoughts you might have before you experience symptoms.

In the meantime, try doing the things I mentioned in my last post as far as protein and several small meals. Also, keeping hydrated (recommended half of your body weight in fluid ounces per day) helps, too.

Let us know how you do!

I went to the doctor today for a quick blood test. My blood sugar was at 81mg/dL. And my thyroid was a 4.8

He said that the rolling of my eyes is just from extreme exhaustion. That I shouldn't worry about it. It's caused from my head hurting so bad.

I'm also going to see a specialist in a week. =]

I do not know on the thyroid levels (I only ever hear they are normal and do not know what my values are) but your blood sugar is fine.

Most likely it is some type of migraine if that is what is causing your eyes to roll up.

Let us know what the specialist says!

Sorry for the late response, my doctor had me on a diet to double check to see if my sympoms lightened up.

All is cured. I'm just stuck in a diet for the rest of my life.

I took a glucose tolerance test.

My levels started out mid 40s. Then shot up to 120s. Not even 10 minutes after that I was 17mg/DL. then I slowly went up over an hour to 90mg/DL. That happened every time I ate. No matter what I ate.

He had me on sugar blockers, to keep me from crazing sugar and tasting sugar. After the first two weeks (Which was hell) I didn't need the blockers and wasn't tempted at all to eat sugar.

I've been sugar free since. Lol. I feel like I went into some drug rehab or something. It was an intense recovery.

As a result, I have to wear a medical bracelet every day for the rest of my life.

My daily diet:

Breakfast (usually at 6am or 9am depending on weekday/weekend):
Smoothie-
1 1/2 tbsp of Genisoy Soy Protein Powder (with added vits and minerals)
Centrum Silver Multi-Vite Chewable
1 banana
1/2 a frozen mango
5 frozen strawberries
1/2 a peach

Lunch (10am on weekdays 12pm on weekend):
Chicken breast, with nothing on it. Except a sprinkle of a seasoning. I don't do well with salt, butter, it makes me crash.
Some vegitable, steamed in those bags by ziploc.

Snack (only on weekdays, at 2pm):
Peanutbutter with raisins, or unsalted pretzels.

Dinner (6pm):
Chicken breast, or some cut of beef with minimal fat. Lightly seasoned.
Vegitables steamed in those bags again.
A whole wheat roll.

Snack (9pm):
another smoothie. The exact same as before.

It works great for me. I don't mind eating the same foods over and over. I was always a picky eater, eating the same foods over and over again anyways. Lol.

Thanks. You've really helped.

I've done the diary before. And my symptoms never seem to go away. It's like the progressively worse when I wake up, then then by 9pm, they settle down while I go to bed.

There's no specific things I'm doing. It's just how it gets. Although, I've noticed that at certain times it's worse than others.

8am-10am, 1pm-3pm, 5pm-8pm; are all my worse times. When I get the symptoms really bad. I KNOW when the clock starts to move toward that time, that I'll get an 'attack'. Especially at 5pm. I get irritable beyond belief. I dropped my pen yesterday and started crying. Because I was so irritated and upset over the fact that I had to get up and walk across the office. Not to mention my poor boyfriend. Our typical phone call around that time is this...
me: "....hi."
Nick:"Hi baby!"
me: "shh. Not so loud my head hurts."
-20 minutes passes of silence-
Nick: "Baby?"
me: "WHAT! I told you I'm doing something quit talking my head hurts." then I usually start to cry. Lol.

It's thankfully not tearing us apart. He's the first boyfriend who's ever been understanding of my condition. He even goes "baby go eat. You're cranky" or he'll tell me to take a nap. Lol. I love that boy.

Anyways. Between the "bad" times, I have a mild headache. But during the bad times I get the headache so bad that my whole body sways and my eyes roll back and I feel like my insides are shaking. But not like I'm about to pass out. I've never passed out.

My dad think I might be misdiagnosed. Honestly, does this all line up with hypoglycemia?

When I eat, I do feel better. For a short while. About an hour. Then the symptoms come back.
