no i never heard of topamax causing acne but please take it as the doctor ordered.

i was taking hydrocodine for about 2 weeks following a minor surgery. I noticed that my face was not oily at all like it normally is, and my skin felt good and smooth. My face cleared up nicely and i did not develop ANY new breakouts during the time i was taking hydrocodine. Since stopping the medication about two weeks ago the oily skin has returned and i have had a normal amount of new pimples appear. The medication change is the only thing i can think of that has changed about my routine.

so my question is - is there something within the composition of hydrocodine that can help with acne. I've read how the medication interacts with an enzyme in the liver and causes the opiod effect but all that is over my head. I obviously dont and can't take hydrocodine for the rest of my life...so im looking for whatever the specific cause might be so i can try to add that to my diet or treatment

thx

I don't know about the whole enzyme thing, but I have some thoughts on why that may be happening. It's possible that stopping the medication is stressing out your body. Hydrocodone can produce withdrawl symptoms if stopped abruptly. Stress in my experience has always caused breakouts. I've been taking vicodin for 6 months. I haven't stopped long enough to have withdrawl but for some reason the last couple weeks i've had some really awful acne. It's possible that your enzyme theory is correct. Let me know how it goes!

I am also having breakouts under my jaw. I wonder if it has anything to do with the hydrocodone. How much do you take per day?

Are you kidding me???? Do you really and truly believe this? and you work for a pharmacy or are a pharmacy tech?? Please tell me that the statement you made above was something of a sarcastic nature and not what you really believe. If its something you believe, then I would love to know, if every customer that comes into your store that takes pain meRAB and you see acne on they're faces, are you are thinking in the back of your mind.... Hmmm bet they abuse they're meRAB???

I've been taking pain meRAB for 8 yrs, much stronger ones for the past two yrs and I can tell you right now that I do NOT abuse my meRAB, BUT 8 yrs ago when I first was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I took Vicodin for a year straight. Not only did it cause my skin to become more oily, I did break out with slight acne AND my hair became extremely brittle and dry and I began to break off, it also caused teeth problems as well. My teeth became very weak and decay began popping up everywhere and many of my teeth became loose. It worked for my pain back then, but I didnt like the side effects that it caused so now I will only take it if that is the absolutle last resort, which just this past week I was prescribed it, while waiting to get into seeing a new PM doctor.

So just because it caused oily skin issues, caused slight acne, teeth problems and my hair to become like straw DOESNT mean that i'm abusing my meRAB, what it means is that MY body reacts to the ingredients in the makeup of the medication, whether it be the active ingredient or the fillers that are used. I can tell you this much too, that each manufacturer uses different fillers, which CAN cause different problems. My pharmacist only used two specific manufacturers and everytime I had to get a vicodin rx filled 8 yrs back, I had to ask for a specific manufacturer because the other one was the one that was causing all the above mentioned issues. Pharmacists love to tell people that a brand and generic are the exact same thing, just ones cheaper than the other. Yes the active ingredient is the exact same, but the fillers are all different with different manufactuers and it is those fillers that can at times cause problems for some people, not because they are abusing they're meRAB.

I'm sorry but I understand that you probably see alot of people passing through your store picking up pain meRAB, but to judge them as being abusers because they have skin conditions or they're teeth are falling out is just really wrong. Unless you know that person personally and know for a fact that that person is abusing they're pain meRAB , then I dont know what gives you the right to pass judgement on someone. Instead of passing judgement based on what they are walking out of your store with and what they're face or teeth look like, why not have alittle compassion for that person and wonder what it would be like to walk in they're shoes for a day.

By the way on your post dated 1/20 you apologized for offending anyone and then two days later, you make a comment about only people who abuse they're meRAB break out. Also for being a "Teck" for 30 yrs, I would think that in that time you would know how to spell "Tech". I'm sorry, but I find your postings very suspicious and suspect.

hydrocodone is a narcotic that relieves pain, you know that of course but i don't think it is the reason your skin got clear. i agree with enjuniper, you were totally not able to stress because you were under the influence of the hydrocodone. let me tell you what that hydrocodone could do if you became addicted to it. your acne would be 10 times worse, and your teeth would rot.
i work at a pharmacy and i have seen people that have to take it because they are always in pain and also addicted to it. it is very addictive. i am not saying people who take it are bad, they need the meRAB for pain, i am just saying that they have rotted teeth because of the affects of taking pain meRAB for so long.

I only take one at night. Occasionally, if I have overdone it I may have to take one in the afternoon. This breakout has occurred since adding the Topamax so I would be leaning more toward that, but different people may react differently and I would suspect the two meRAB share some of the same ingredients so it's possible.

that's so interesting that you say that. I had surgery a week ago and was taking hydrocodine for 4 days following (I'm now off of it). My face had NO oil as well for the last week!! My first thought was something they gave me at the hospital, but since someone else had the same thing guess it is. For those who said it "reduces your stress" it does not do much for me so I know that wasn't it. It didn't even take much off the pain for me so I stopped it (besides it gave me insomnia).

Heroin addicts (as well as addicts of other narcotic drugs such as percodan, oxycodon, Vicodin and codeine) experience serious decay in their teeth due to a relentless sweet tooth. Note that this is not a direct effect of the drug itself, but rather a lifestyle tendency stimulated by the drug. In effect, these drugs stimulate a simultaneous addiction to sugary soft drinks and candy which is the proximate (most direct) cause of their tooth decay. Addicts of all stripes are more likely to eat and drink sugary items because they are always easily available, inexpensive, and require no preparation. "

So- ACTUALLY vicodin and other opioiRAB produce a craving for sweets which leaRAB to cavities and dental problems. That makes more sense than the drug itself causing problems. I've been taking 2 5/500 every 4 hours 2-3 times a day for a while and haven't had any problems other than the ones I had before I started taking it. I did notice an increased craving for chocolate though. :)

i stand by what i have said but i didn't mean it wasn't a good pain med. i am saying if you take it to get high or you have to take a lot a day over several years your face will break out and your teeth will go bad. most people take it as directed and there is no problem. i am talking about addicted people to narcotics. it isn't just hydrocodone it is the stronger narcotics also. i apologize if i upset anyone on this board. i know this because i am a compounding pharmacy teck and have been for 30 years. everything can be taken to excess. i was just warning people that addiction can happen. i never wanted to hurt anyones feelings or make waves. just trying to prevent addiction. i see too much of it. it is sad. i apologize.

I dont know what kind of people you deal with, but i've never heard of peoples teeth rotting from taking pain meRAB. i've been on vicodin for 6 mo. and never had anything like that happen.

I have had to take hydrocodone for three years for nerve damage. I have always had to have a lot of dental work all of my life. I have had less dental work in the last three years than I ever have. I am very careful with my pain medication and am certainly not addicted to it. My teeth are not falling out.

I was browsing this board because my doctor recently added Topamax and I was curious if this could be causing a SLIGHT breakout I am having along my jaw. I have never heard of hydrocodone causing teeth to fall out.

I think sometimes it is a sensitive subject to those who may have to take pain meRAB for legitimate pain if they feel that people are questioning their need for them or their dependence on them, etc. Not saying that is what you were doing at all. Just that it can be a touchy subject. I know it makes me uncomfortable sometimes when people make jokes like why don't I just "pop another pill" like it's something I would actually want to do. Very few people know how much pain I may actually be in before I will take something for it because I try to put such limitations on what I will take. So I admit that I overreact sometimes to statements regarding pain medication because I hear too many insensitive comments about it from people all the time. No offense taken!

It's good to know that hydrocodone may be a contributing factor to breakouts but as I said in my earlier post I would be leaning more toward the Topamax since it is the newest drug I am taking. Have you (or anyone else) ever heard of Topamax causing acne?

no, i don't think so. only people that have breakouts are people that abuse the drugs.
