Hybrid battery on Toyota Prius just died!!?

The hybrid battery on our 2001 Toyota Prius just died. Toyota announced a pricing decrease of the batteries for the first-gen models to $2288.00. But the dealers are quoting between $3500 and $4000 to replace it. What charges are they stacking on? It's hard to detect whether we are being jacked or not. Seems so.

I've heard that this price is about what others have paid. There's a lot of labor involved, battery disposal fees come into play here too.
