Hi,

My husband is having an anterior L3-S1 fusion tomorrow. He has had two surgeons tell him it's less painful recovery going in from the front. He had a laminectomy/fusion with his own bone on L4-L5 in May of 2006 and the surgeons told him this surgery would not be as painful.

I am scared to death for him tomorrow and was hoping someone who has had this surgery could chime in and tell me what to expect.

Thanks,
Heather

I had the exact same surgery in March 2008. I felt immediate relief in that my back didn't hurt when I woke up. They had me walking with a walker the next day. Everyone recovers differently but the more he can walk the better off he will be. I used the walker and would count progress by the nuraber of driveways I could walk. I had some balance issues so I ended up using the walker for a couple of months and eventually worked up to 2 miles with the walker. Again, everyone is different and he may not have the balance issues that I did. I can now walk 4 miles almost pain free. I read a lot of books and spent a lot of time on the internet. If you or he has any questions during the recovery, don't hesitate to ask your surgeon. My thoughts and prayers will be with you today.
