Hurrah - A ghost story for Xmas

Wow! I thought Id imagined that one!!
Ive spent years trying to find out what it was. I was just maybe 4 years old when I saw that and it really stuck with me - a tad traumatising. Never been able to find out what it was or even anyone else who remembered it.

Thanks to you and the other poster for mentioning it.
I remember
the blood soaked bed and a futile dash to hospital
but nothing else.

Would love to see it again.

(Edit: And apparantly I will since I've just "found" it somewhere. 1977, BBC "A Ghost Story For Christmas: Stigma". Very happy :D . Hadn't realised it was part of the same annual strand that the MR James stories where part of.)

Whistle and I'll Come to You with Michael Hordern in is an absolute favourite of mine but there are so many good ones.

The Signalman, Warning to the Curious, Ash Tree, Ice House, love them all.

Sadly the fact it is being adapted by the creator of the garbage that was "Luther" fills me with dread.

Love ghost stories at xmas. It used to be an annual tradition but for whatever reason we dont usually see many new ones now so looking forward to this.

Wonder if anyone can help name one I saw years ago and loved?

Think it was in the 80s about a city yuppie couple buying a derelict country cottage as a weekend home. They renovated it and invited frienRAB down for xmas. They sat down to their meal but couldnt eat as it tasted rancid and the wine seemed like blood. They had been showing their before and after photos of the house and realised these had changed to include the last residents from 100+ years ago. They went into a room which had changed to how it was back then with the original family who had starved to death in poverty huddled together.

The final scene shows police at the cottage and the TV news on saying the emaciated bodies of 4adults had been found but there was a perfectly good meal on the table. Dont think my description has done it justice but I loved it and its bugged me for years that I dont know what its called.

Thanks for reading and hope you can help :)

I cant imagine the cash strapped seventies BBC spent much money on The Signalman and yet it has gained iconic status over the years. The film quality on the face of it is poor-it looks and feels cold and drab and yet it all seems to come together to make a great tv moment. I always tune in when I spot it-its part of Christmas.

That's the one

In this version Arthur doesn't survive as shortly after the woman is spotted on the lake that big tree falls on the boat, squashing Arthur, Stella and the child

Yeah the Woman in Black is great. I remember having to watch it in English class, that was one day I'll never forget!

Good to see we are getting more Gothic horror stories for Xmas. That seems the right time of year to put them on. I loved The Crooked House.

As a child I remember a drama on TV that scared the life out of me. The ghost was a shadow of a woman who would beckon you to go upstairs. I had nightmares for weeks.

Thank you so much. Surprised it was 1972 tho - sure I saw it in the 80s and it seemed a contemporary tale then; yuppies buying a country cottage, outpricing the locals but hardly ever living there was a real issue at the time. Glad I now know what it was called and would love to see it once more. Many thanks once again :)
