Hurrah - A ghost story for Xmas

Christmas ghost story strand on the Beeb is usually a winner for me. Can't beat a few spooky chills ;)
I liked the recent mini series which Mark Gatiss was involved with on the bbc.

My other half says they remember "The Woman In Black" always being on every Christmas, went to see it in London twice and its very good

Even got the DVD i heard they are making a remake of this anyone else heard of that?

You know what I'd love to see again, the BBC's Ghostwatch. Never repeated as far as I know. Scared the hell out of me as a kid! Would probably laugh at it now sadly.

I have that one on DVD too. Bloody scary in places. Some of the performances are a little shonky (especially from the family whose hosue is haunted), but the bit with Sarah Greene and the cupboard under the stairs is hair-raising.

Yeah, hammer are producing it. Daniel Radcliffe is going to be in it and it will be in 3D.

Not sure if they are going to do it as a play within a play, or just as the story. I would imagine the latter, but I wouldn'timagine it will have the same impact.

Really chuffed to hear that there's going to be a Ghost Story at Christmas this year, I was just wondering about this the other day :D. Loved 'Crooked House'

I got the DVD last Christmas and so far I've only dared to rewatch it once. For my money it's stood the test of time incredibly well and is still one of the most terrifying things I've ever watched.

Good news about the remake of Whistle and I'll Come to You, definitely my favourite MR James story. Still, it would be nice if they tried making some original stuff as well - Crooked House was brilliant.

One of my favourite's was in the eighties (I think) about a young couple who move into a new house. As they enter the house a wind ruffles the woman's hair. From that moment on she changes and her side begins to bleed. I have a vivid recollection of the husband waking up one morning. He can't wake his wife so he throws back the bedclothes (touch of gratuitous female nudity) and his wife is lying in a pool of blood that is pouring down the side of the bed.

I can't remember how it ended.

Anybody remember this, or what it was called? And who were the leading characters?

That's the one. I recall it started around the same time that Medium started screening in the UK - both featuring a blond haired medium called Alison but with very different treatments. Not an easy watch at times and often with quite downbeat conclusions but Lesley Sharp was as terrific as ever.

I wonder if we should blame A Christmas Carol and the Victorian Christmas for this or were ghost stories always popular at festive perioRAB. Maybe when everything else is directed towarRAB light and fun it makes us relish the darkness more.

I remember watching this over 20 years ago one christmas.
It was terrifying and i was afraid to go to bed after! To this
day when ever i think about that woman and her evil face, i
still feel a bit spooked out and worried! :D
p.s. Just clicked onto the link showing a clip from the
programme, and had to switch it off again! One of the
scariest things i've ever seen!

Never seen the version of Woman In Black refered to here, but clicked on the link, and it reminded me of the stage version I saw recently, and gave me the willies all over again!

I think that one was Stigma with Kate Binchy , on some 30 + ahem:o years ago one Christmas.
IIRC the ending was this.

She died in the ambulance on the way to hospital from blood loss.

It's never been repeated, no idea why.

I think "Lost Hearts" was one of the most frightening things I ever watched - perhaps it was my age at the time. But I can still see those two children smiling as they move their hanRAB to reveal the horrible truth.

I also love the Woman in Black. Not sure how DR will be in it though.

John Hurt & MR James seems perfect - really looking forward to it.

Another vote for that. Totally chilling and would have been only about 10 or 11 when I stumbled on it. That is the one which enRAB whith her standing on the lake isn't it?:eek:

Wasn't there a traditional ghost story televised in the late 70's on the BBC called 'lonely hearts' ? about two children who haunt an old man in a big country house.
And why doesn't someone dramatise or do a film on the legend of Sawney Bean!!!!?????
