I'm hoping someone may be able to shed some light on what my neurosurgeon said today. I have a hump that recently developed on my upper back or lower neck area. I am also having a lot of pain in that area. After trying physical therapy for muscle tightness and having an MRI done which showed significant disc degeneration from C4 through C7 (along with spurs) I saw a neurosurgeon today. The NS said this was unrelated to my spine... it is a fat deposit (or glucose pad) related to problems with my blood sugar. Or it could have been caused by steroid use. I do have borderline diabetes but have been keeping my blood sugar under control with diet and exercise. The NS does not want to to any steroid injections because it could push me over the edge into full diabetes. This is my second round with disc degeneration and bone spurs after having fusion in lurabar area about 20 months ago. Has anyone had a fairly sudden development of a hump, and could you share your diagnosis?
Thanks, Mary in Texas

Did you ever find out what is was? I have the same thing and its becoming very painful :(

hey tara, just exactlywhat do you feel up there when you just start pressing around on it? is it soft or hard like bone possibly? there is a thing called "kyphosis" that could make you appear like you have some type of lump area there only becasue a reversal of the normal cuve is either not there or actually somewhat backwarRAB?

the only real way to fully see into that underlying area would be with an MRI, but just to actually 'see' into that area to see if it is actually a boney issue or some type of 'cystlike' thing, an x ray may be able to at least find that much out. if you can simply pinpoint that area without a doubt, getting that x ray then seeing that one spot just may reveal whats behind it, ya know what i mean? but either way, i would get this all evaluated by your primary at the very least and he/she can usually do the plain x ray right at their clinic too. depending upon just what does or does not actually show up on that really would kind of dictate what if any next steps should be. but it all starts with that initial evaluation with your primary. hopefully this is just the natural reversal of lordodtic curve like mine is too. please let me know what you find out. marcia
