There must be a previous thread for this and I apologise for going over old ground but I'm pretty pissed of at the moment with my latest DVD aquisitions. :mad:

1) NURSE BETTY (A comedy I think :confused: ) - I paid full price for this because my wife likes Morgan Freeman :cool: . There was only one customer review to be had on AMAZON which reviewed this as an excellent film.
Well I sat with my old lady last night and watched in total dismay. I never even tittered once. We both thought it was slow, dull and poor entertainment. :cry:

2) MAGNOLIA - (Cameo? :confused: I dont know what to think) Fortunately I got this in a 3 for
 
I don't think you'll like Translation tbh. Personally I thought it was very good overall, with great performances from Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansen (very easy on the eye), but like Magnolia you could argue it takes a long time to go, well, nowhere really. Two people, one about twice the age of the other, are brought together through their shared isolation of being in a foreign city and have what you might call a 'thing'.

Can't stand dude type humour so haven't seen B & T.
 
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is very funny, but I think it's very much of its time. I saw it again fairly recently and it looked a bit dated, TBH.

Magnolia is hard-going and not an easy film to watch, being thick on plot and low on action. It's the sort of movie critics love but doesn't really appeal to general audiences.

I've not seen Nurse Betty because I'm allergic to Renee Zellweger - she makes me want to puke.

Lost in Translation is supposed to be very good (the soundtrack is awesome) but I suspect if you didn't like Magnolia, you won't like this much, either.

As for other suggestions, what sort of movies do you generally like? It's hard to buy something on the basis of what others have liked because we're all different and one man's masterpiece is another man's turkey.

Some books are good guides - the Time Out film guide is excellent, but they do tend to give good reviews to arty movies. The Halliwell Film Guide is a good indicator of more popular opinion.

You could also check the film reviews at imdb.com as well. I think they're more accurate than Amazon's, although they're still based on the opinions of the general public.
 
I thought LoT was really really over-rated (and it's Japanese stereotypes were rather patronising).

Best thing to do before you buy a dvd is to post a thread on RAB asking for opinions. I've found that most FM's comments here are normally very helpful.

Or try rottentomatoes.com for lots of contrasting reviews.
