It stand for Hyper Text Markup Language. You can use it to build static websites. It's no good for posting to a server. You'll need Java Server Pages, ASP.NET 2.0, ASP, PHP, and there are more. If you're thinking of selling things on this website, you'll need to set up an Ecommerce system. SEO is good for getting nice rankings on a search engine but isn't necessary.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, it's a 'programming language' (I put it in quotes because it isn't really) that browsers interpret to display pages. But if you're making an online business, you need to also be familiar with scripting, databases, etc.
 
Hello, I want to start an online business but some say you need to know HTML? First off, what is it, how does one learn it, and do I need to?

HTML is the language web pages are written with. If you want to start your own business, it's not absolutely necessary to know it, but it would really help to build your pages the way you want them.
