HTC Legend vs Acer Liquid E

I'm actually testing the Liquid E right now.
It's fast, cheap and runs a fairly pure version of Android 2.1, so if you're looking for something more likely to get timely updates, it's what you want.
That said, the HTC Legend is definitely better built. Acer's phone feels... well, like an Acer phone: it's all about the specs inside to mask the fairly cheap build quality outside. The Liquid E won't fall apart in weeks, but the Legend is a unibody aluminum design just a hair's breadth away from a MacBook Pro in terms of rock-solid build. HTC's Sense UI is also quite nice, though it probably means you'll have to wait a few months for an official upgrade to a later Android version.
Weigh things along those lines and you'll probably have your decision quickly.

I purchased the Acer Liquid E last week and been overall quite happy since the price tag.
I might purchase the Legend just for the build quality.

Honestly, from many dealers I talked to, many people are buying the HTC Legend for its looks, even though more powerful Androids are available if you want to pay a bit more.
Despite the mere 600MHz ARM11 processor, the speed of the Legend is deceptive. It feels nearly as fast as some of the Snapdragon phones. Plus many of the Facebookers using the phone have fallen in love with Friend Stream. If you try it, you see why.

The HTC Legend has a lower-res screen. This is not necessarily a dealbreaker: If you think the screen looks nice, then it suffices for you. But it could well be that with less pixels to address, it's equally snappy at 600 MHz compared to a higher-res phone at 1 GHz.

I'm pretty happy with the Acer. After using it for few weeks it doesn't seem as plastic and cheap as i thought it would. I'm very pleased with the speed of the phone and the screen. Even in direct sunlight i have no problems using it. The call quality is also really good.
Some reviews i have read of the Acer make note of how hot it gets when you use it. The only time i notice it heating up is when it's charging, other than that it's fine.

Glad to hear you like it so far. Acer does do upgrades (the A1 got an update just recently), so you won't be completely stuck while waiting for 2.2.
For $50 Canadian on a contract, the Liquid e is pretty hard to beat, so for the price, the absence of rooting is probably worth it.

According to a quick search, the Rogers Liquid E is easily rooted. And according to another search, it can be carrier-unlocked too, as reported on xda by a successful Telus user. So neither seems to be an issue overall.
However apparently one unlucky user in France flashed a Rogers ROM that somehow managed to carrier-lock their non-Rogers phone to Rogers! So from that standpoint, beware.

I have to say that I love the build of the Legend. For anyone who can't see one in person you can check out the HTC Aria to see how quick it moves as the internals are the same. The clock speed is deceptive for sure.
I've owned both of these phones.
I am a long time Blackberry user, I decided I wanted to give Android a try. So, I bought a Acer Liquid E and I was really disappointed. I found the screen was very difficult to write on and often if a button was in a corner it was nearly impossible to get it to register. This made setting up email etc an incredible pain. So I returned the Liquid E and was shopping for a new BB or something else with a keyboard.
Then my Blackberry died and I needed a new phone ASAP, so I bought a HTC Legend. What a difference! The screen is very responsive and I can type messages as fast as I could on my Blackberry. I like the Sense UI as well.
The build quality of the legend is a lot better than the Acer. There is a video on YouTube of someone doing multiple drop tests with a Legend, I don't think the Acer would do as well.
I was considering staying with BB, but I'm so glad I've moved to Android with the Legend.

Having revived this thread after more than a month... it's noteworthy that Telus has now priced the HTC Desire very favourably compared to the Rogers Liquid E. For a $50-75 supplement you can get a much snappier phone with more ROMs available for it. And of course it can do everything the Legend can, using the same Sense interface, at a higher resolution. It doesn't have the same design aesthetic as the Legend but it's a great phone. (No wonder it's sold out!)
