HTC Hero Problem with setting up Google Account?

I bought an Orange HTC Hero and had it unlocked. I got the WAP and MMS Codes and it all works but I can't access the Market button as it requires a Google account and everytime I try and do that my phone tells me my SIM is not able to establish data connection.

I was just wondering if anybody has come across that problem?
