HTC Hero on Orange, Rom wont update.

Hi everyone, Im still on my pc after 3 hours trying to do a simple op that should take 20 mins tops. Im an orange customer still running 1.5 software. Ive downloaded the htc sync to my desk top no problem, I then visit HTC website, go to updates, now my problem starts, it doesnt matter which Rom (Orange) update I select, as soon as I type in my Serial Number I get a message" Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device". It happens on any of the updates from Orange, even the one released around September last year. If I ignore the Orange update and update with 2.73.405.5 just for the HTC Hero it installs it ok.
Everything seemed to go ok, messages on the phone and pc screen, I did everything, rebooted as per instructions and it seems ok, but, when I check the phones status the firmware still says 1.5 but the Baseband version has changed, the Kernel has changed and the build No has changed.
Is this correct or what? Any ideas why the Orange update on the HTC Website doesnt recognise my phone. I called Orange, they sent me a message to switch off the phone and back on, they said it will alter some settings and it might work but its not helped. Any of you guys got any ideas where Im going wrong? Thanks for reading.
Kind regards, Ziggy

Each ROM can only be applied to specific phones (you need the right hardware) with specific versions of Android (you need the right version that the update is meant to be applied to) from specific networks (as the networks customise their ROMs).

As best as I can tell, the latest Orange Hero ROM is dated 4th February 2010. Surely you have this version already? That would be why it's not suitable as this update would only work on phones that are currently running the version released on 23rd November 2009.

Hi Extorian, thanks for your reply, I have made some progress with my problem and discovered something about my mobile. About 3 months ago my mobile became faulty, earphones wouldnt work no led light on when charging and no notification when mail came in. I returned it to carphone warehouse, they said it needs to go away for repair. I got it back 3 weeks later with the repair note ROM been reflashed, now fast forward to today, the reason my Serial number isnt working on the Orange rom update is that they had actually replaced my mobile with an unlocked one without telling me. The serial number on the back of the original box is completly different to the one inside the phone, so this is why the Orange update isnt recognising the serial number, it isnt an orange phone, its unlocked. I might try to do an over the air rom update now, if that doesnt work I think I can just put in the generic update, (is that correct)?
I will be away for 3 days now so I probably wont have the time to reply to anyone but again many thanks Extorian for your time. Kind Regards, Ziggy

If you get offered an OTA update by the phone, just accept it. The update should be rolling out around now so the phone should pop up and tell you there's an update and offer to install it.

If you don't want to wait, sure, try the generic ROM. If the site accepts your serial number then it should be fine.
