HTC Droid Eris Data Plan?

Once the Droid is activated it automatically puts you on the basic or select plan and adds the $30 smartphone plan. It will not delete that plan unless you deactive a smartphone. You are required to pay $30 because the phone is connected to the internet the whole time its on. You would go over a lot of you only paid the $10. Thats why its required
 
I am thinking about getting the HTC Droid Eris PHone from Verizon and I was wondering if anybody knew weather you had to get a data plan with it, and if you do then can you get a $10 data plan? Thanks
