How's the Nokia N80 behave on Cingular (UMTS)

I was wondering if anyone here has used a Nokia N80 on the Cingular network in some of the smaller markets (I live in Grand Rapids, MI), and if so what was the experience like? Did your home market have UMTS turned on there yet?

I live in western Michigan, so the Nokia store in Chicago isn't that far from me. It would be easy to go there and pick up a N80ie if it is a good phone for Cingular. I plan on doing some "tethered" internet use, but mostly a load of e-mail with it. I have a good "unlimited" data plan at the moment, and I am "out of contract" as well and don't really want to move to another carrier (T-Mobile?) and be tied down there for two years, watching with sadness as other carriers ramp up their high-speed data offerings!

Seems that Cingular does not have "HSDPA" here at the moment, the closest market active around here would be Lansing/Flint areas, I think. Also, I think that Cingular has a lot of 850MHz towers around here, courtesy of the AT&T "Blue" infrastructure they aquired some time ago.

Bottom Line is: I don't want to spend good money on a unlocked GSM phone if it doesn't include 3G UMTS!

Thanks for any wisdome offered, I love HoFo!!

unfortunately none of the N80's support cingulars UMTS band here in the states because they use a different frequency then in Europe. Your best bet would be to wait for the N75 to come out because it will feature both of Cingular's UMTS bands (850 and 1900)

The freakin guy scammed me on ebay! Sold it to me for $400 USD..

Claims its Made in Finland, which it is actually.. But its a freakin Proto!

Never even mentioned that on his listing, plus it doesn't vibrate!!

I warned him, that If I can't resell this I'm gonna report him..

Well Luckily someone bought for $420.. I made a profit.. Hehehehe..

I will never get my hand on Protos again!! What about yours? what's on your protos lacking?

Back to the original coverage question, i live in cocoa beach FL which is very small and out of the way and i get 3G in some parts and edge most with an e62 so i think yould at least get edge

I tried it.. by using NSS and changing the product code to the IE and re-install the F/W via NSU..

Nothing has change.. It didn't work out.. I even tried just changing the language packs.. No effects either..

Give it a try and let me know.. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks for the info, everyone! You all saved me from being disappointed after spending $500 or so and still getting EDGE speeds even if something faster was available around here....
