How would you take it if a girl invited you to go hiking with her?

I really like this shy guy (I'm shy too) and I want to ask him to hang out. But I want to do it in a casual way so he doesn't think I'm asking him on a date. I was thinking of asking if he wanted to go hiking with me. Is that a good idea? Or should I leave it more vague, like "do you want to hang out some time?"
