civilization as it is now? (I'm focusing on Western thought/worldview rather than geopolitical developments.)

That's a very lengthy answer and I don't have the time for it, but
For one thing, they brought slavery to the Western Hemisphere and we know how that event impacted life and culture in the Americas (including Caribbean islands).

The clash between the Holy Roman Empire (as much of it became protestant, while the noblemen wanted to keep catholicism - this created much internal conflict) and the world of Catholicism was horrible. It killed many millions of people.

Look up the Thirty Years' War, as an example of just how horrible things were.

The Holy Roman Empire is the be all and end all of western culture.

Christiandom has ruled western society for centuries and a lot of our superstitions, attitude towards other religious and cultural beliefs, and our basic day to day life are influenced by it.
