How would you know if a bacterial culture produced a water-soluble pigment?

I know it has something to do with the color but I am a bit uncertain. Thanks for the help.

Yes, if it is a pigment, then it would be colored. To know if it is water soluble, you would simple add water to the bacterial culture, sonicate, or agitate to rupture the cell membrane, and see if the colored pigment went into solution. If yes, then it is water soluble.
