So far Space Strategy games that have held my interest are few and far between. Haegemonia was a very nice one that comes to mind, especially because up until the moment it came out only games like Imperium Galactica II had held any appeal to me. The tech tree is quite solid, and the space battles are decent, but what is lacking is a robust political and micromanagement system ala Civ 4. Otherwise this game would of topped it back in its day.
I like the recent offerings of Sins of a Solar Empire. It reminds me of Frontier Wars, which some of you may not be so familiar (made by ubisoft) It basically had 3 races you could choose from and you went out and mined gas from gas giants, and ore from terrestrial planets. It had a very starcraft-esque theme. Even when choosing the races, being 3, human, energy being aliens, bug aliens.
Ultimately there have been very few offerings in recent times to really whet my appetite. Spore was a bittersweet game, if it had more elements for micromanaging your empire like Galactic Civilizations II it may of been quite the groundbreaker.
So what will it take for a truely momentous space strategy that excels on all counts where others have come up short. Will there ever be a far reaching game like the Total War series, that focuses on running your vast Space Empire.
