GOATS on a boat!

I'm taking US History and I'm supposed to think of ways to defend Roger B. Taney in his ruling for the Dred Scott VS Sanford case, when the Supreme Court said that people of African descent imported into the US and held as slaves - whether they are slaves or not - were not protected under the Constitution and could never be American citizens. And because they were not able to become citizens, they could not sue in court.
I'm supposed to come up with ways to deny that I was responsible for the whole thing, but I'm having trouble thinking of ideas. I do know that he did own slaves but emancipated them and gave pensions to the slaves who were too old to work though. Any other ways to defend him?
Thanks.
Sorry, I meant... I'm supposed to come up with ways to deny that HE was responsible for the whole thing.*
