How would you explain "Eerie" to your child?

The partially buried Turret.

And she asked me, “ What does eerie mean?”
I struggled for reply
Casting my mind back
Past TV definitions
Beyond the dictionarial
To the times I felt the need for
Eerie……

………………….

The last tower of Tullichewan Castle
Wedged in the hillside
Beyond the new road
Discovered that Autumnal afternoon
The D shaped hole (On its side)
And no way up, only down
An old nylon rope
Lifted from the pilot’s dinghy
Secured to a sapling
Drawing lots for first descent
And down I went

The laughter from above as they ran off
With the rope
Then the silence that wouldn’t come
The sepia gloom of half-way point
Left no definition
No point of reference
And the not knowing
The spongy underfoot unseen stance
Might give way
To what or where

Eyes screwed only brought saline waves
Relax,
Open to let in what few images may come

And slowly, on the vague outline of a sandstone block
Could I see a chalk-marked perimeter
Of a long ago drawn face
And as the picture cleared
The face was infantile and crudely drawn
Both familiar and disturbing
The date below was 1875
But the face was mine

“It just means unnatural,” I told her.
And she finished her ice-cream.
