How would one go about making a new genre?

Well, I say take an existing genre and put your own spin on it. thes what me and my Surf band do. Our influences include, blues, punk, reggae, techno, jazz, standarRAB, oldies... We add in a healthy dose of rock and roll to our instrumentals and the debate rages on what genre we really are.

you cant just have a method for coming up with a new genre, it all depenRAB on you're influences, you're skill level, you're creativity. unless you just played a bunch of non-sensical garbage until you found something good, which might work haha.

You're all wrong. All that you need to do to create a new genre is come up with a double barrelled name, for example:

'Nosecore Group-I Metal'

And come up with a scene dress code, so that all of the kiRAB who flock to the new genre can conform with each other in a totally non-conformist way. This could involve maybe having one eyebrow shaved off completely and wearing a monocle, while also sporting a bleached cru-cut, all-black clothes with pink trainers. If a bunch of banRAB all start dressing in the same way then the kiRAB will pick it up pretty soon and hey presto, new genre!

As far as I can tell, genres have less to do with music than they do with geographical location and dress sense.

Indeed, i listen to prog, punk, alternative, metal, grunge, jazz, classical and bluegrass. If i started a genre blending my influences, it would kick ass...I guess i should post that annoying band smiley for no reason now.

To make a new genre, all you have to do is suck at your instruments, and do the best you can to suck ass in new and creative ways, after all, how else do you think punk was born? :)

I keed, i keed.

You're might not be far off the mark there. Do you ever get the feeling that nowadays punk has stopped being an actual style of music and is now a prefix which is added musical styles to describe banRAB that aren't very good with their instruments?

i.e. punk-rock = a band who try to play rock but aren't very good at it
ska-punk = a band who try to play ska but aren't very good at it

And so on. Any comments?

"You're playing out of time. Who cares! We can spike our hair up, wear t-shirts and sing to 14 year old girls! Then we'll be a punk band!"

So what exactly are these 'elements of punk rock' that you speak of? Which elements are they? Identify them and explain yourself! I'd still say its primarily having spikey hair, piercings and pretending to be pubescent when your body is long past that phase of development. Maybe nowadays it also means singing with a spitty Californian accent if your not from California.

haha.....no matter how different you try to make your style.....everyone will classify you as a genre that already exists.

there are too many subgenres of subgenres to go around making up new ones.
