Will it help to get another puppy that is a playful is he? for example a boxer. How do I help him adapt to the change?

He will probably be just fine. Make sure that you let him know that the baby comes first. Don't get another dog when you just have a new baby. You need to sleep and have peace. Play with your dog while the baby is asleep or while he/she is nearby and can watch. Beagles generally love children once they get to know them. Don't get a bigger dog that will grow up with the baby. It will knock the baby down when the baby is learning to walk and cause other problems just by being a little clutsy or pushy. Your beagle is probably going to be the happiest dog in town in a few years when the baby is throwing toys.

I have a bit of a grumpy old man beagle, he's 7 yrs old and loves kids but only puts up with so much before he'll just kind of knock them out of the way. Anyway, when we brought our daughter home (4.5 months ago) he went nuts' every time she cried he would pace back and forth beside the bassinet and whine until one of us came and got her. During the first couple of months I kept him penned up in the hall way if my little one was on the floor, and only allowed him to come near her under very controlled circumstances, now he's totally used to her and lays right beside her at all times when she is playing on her mat. Just take it slow with the introductions and make sure you are paying lots of attention to your beagle when he is being calm and submissive. Don't pet him if he is jumping all over you when you have the baby, make him go away and give you space and soon he will learn that he needs to be calm when you are holding the baby. My beagle now sits right on top of my feet when ever I'm nursing. If you are at all worried about the introductions get a trainer to come to the house and help with it, never leave the baby and the dog alone together and be very careful until you know how the dog will react. Getting a puppy know would just create chaos in your home and make for a very unbalanced pack.

Getting another dog will not be too much.I got another dog (already have three) I am pregnant and have a one year old.

If anything, it would be better for your beagle.Once the baby comes, the dog will put shoved aside for a little bit.If he has another dog to play with, it will be easier for him and he will be less depressed.

A boxer...well....they are very hyper. If you can handle it, go ahead.Perhaps rescue a dog closer in size to your beagle. If you do this, do it a few months before the due date so the dog can get used to the change since a new one will soon follow.

I think getting another puppy could help but you are about to have a newborn or already have one, why put more stress on yourself. If your dog has only been around the two of you for a while it may be jealous, try keeping the dog away from the baby for a couple of months. Or just see how your dog does, he may surprise you.

Don't get another puppy. That would be way too much. Probably too much change for beagle but definitely too much for you! ;-)

Talk to a dog trainer about prepping your dog before and learn some good tips for introducing baby and dog. It'll be well worth the money spent.
