I have a bit of a grumpy old man beagle, he's 7 yrs old and loves kids but only puts up with so much before he'll just kind of knock them out of the way. Anyway, when we brought our daughter home (4.5 months ago) he went nuts' every time she cried he would pace back and forth beside the bassinet and whine until one of us came and got her. During the first couple of months I kept him penned up in the hall way if my little one was on the floor, and only allowed him to come near her under very controlled circumstances, now he's totally used to her and lays right beside her at all times when she is playing on her mat. Just take it slow with the introductions and make sure you are paying lots of attention to your beagle when he is being calm and submissive. Don't pet him if he is jumping all over you when you have the baby, make him go away and give you space and soon he will learn that he needs to be calm when you are holding the baby. My beagle now sits right on top of my feet when ever I'm nursing. If you are at all worried about the introductions get a trainer to come to the house and help with it, never leave the baby and the dog alone together and be very careful until you know how the dog will react. Getting a puppy know would just create chaos in your home and make for a very unbalanced pack.
