I have a question I've always been curious to find out. For people that went to college in the 1960/1970s, how were people expected to do calculus, algebra, differential equations, linear algebra (determinants),etc..without the use of computers or calculators. For instance, how were people taught Newton's Method to approximate zeros of polynomials back then because it certainly would have been a major pain to do. Was the material less rigorous for them back then because they didnt have the technology to do any complex calculations?
