How well will the Government run GM, Medicare, or Universal Healthcare?

A History Lesson:

1. In 1913, thinking it was being overcharged by the steel companies for armor plate for warships, the federal government decided to build its own plant. It estimated that a plant with a 10,000-ton annual capacity could produce armor plate for only 70% of what the steel companies charged.

When the plant was finally finished, however -- three years after World War I had ended -- it was millions over budget and able to produce armor plate only at twice what the steel companies charged. It produced one batch and then shut down, never to reopen.

2. Or take Medicare. Other than the source of its premiums, Medicare is no different, economically, than a regular health-insurance company. But unlike, say, UnitedHealthcare, it is a bureaucracy-beclotted nightmare, riven with waste and fraud. Last year the Government Accountability Office estimated that no less than one-third of all Medicare disbursements for durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, were improper or fraudulent. Medicare was so lax in its oversight that it was approving orthopedic shoes for amputees.

3. When the federal government nationalized the phone system in 1917, justifying it as a wartime measure that would lower costs, it turned it over to the Post Office to run. (The process was called "postalization," a word that should send shivers down the back of any believer in free markets.) But despite the promise of lower prices, practically the first thing the Post Office did when it took over was . . . raise prices.

The govt will NOT be running GM. The bad cars will still be designed and manufactured by the same management crowd that ruined it while lining their pockets.

Medicare runs better than ANY private insurance using only about 3% for overhead vs 30% - 40% at the privates. The pay docs about the same, pay faster, and with none of the bureaucracy designed by privates to make it as hard as possible to actually use the insurance you pay for.

Every other Western nation, every single one, has some sort of universal health insurance, and they are all healthier, happier, and live longer than us. The have lower infant mortality, lower maternal mortality, and do way better in anything you can measure.

But go ahead kicking and screaming. It's going to happen. Maybe not this year or decade, but eventually liberals win. For over 100 years, liberals end up winning every fight because people realize those are the good ideas.

Keep screaming. I know a good throat guy. If you can afford him.

I consider this to be a propaganda plant---an attempt by the right-wing (i.e., "fascist") branch of the GOP to push the false idea of "smaller government" (which we now know has always meant removing all checks and balances/regulation in Orwellian doublespeak)---an attempt to demonize "government" (which is us, by the way via our elected representatives) through innuendo and sow seeds of doubt so their greedy fat-cat friends in powerful CEO/corporate positions can continue getting no-bid contracts, huge bonuses for running companies into the ground, committing fraud (ala Enron or Madoff), not being held accountable, outsourcing American jobs, avoiding taxes by using off-shore accounts/P.O. boxes, and all the other anti-American behaviors that have been so prevalent under the last three Republican presidents.

If a corporation is run by a group of people that do not own the company it will never be ran efficiently, there is no reason for them to put in the extra effort. Just think about the hiring practices of a Government ran Company. How many misfits can be hid on one payroll?

It appears that GM, as well as Citigroup when they get it, will be a fantastic way to funnel funds. They don't intend ANY of it to succeed. Did you know that recently GM was trying to loan money to a hedge fund to buy Delphi? Hmmm

A failing company claiming bankruptcy receiving TAXPAYER funds tries to LOAN money? Time for us all to wake up. Forget about the left and right. Just wake the hell up.

why do you bring up GM
has the government ever said it was going to run it?
I have looked on the internet ad all I can find is repeated statements that it wont.
do you think your a bit hysterical?
if you have to go back 80 years to get examples then the government is doing pretty well

Have you looked at standard oil and why the anti trust laws were brought in?

the ultimate outcome of capitalism is monopoly , not cheaper prices, capitalism for te good of the people requires government interference, unfettered capitalism is bad. capitalism doest attempt to the best for society , it exclusively trys to make a profit no matter what the cost is to society

lets face it you have a political position and you are just looking to find reasons to back your political position

lol thanks for the history lesson! I think you answer you own question. It amazes me that people still think that the government is the answer. The founders warned us of these things. There will be a Mother Of All Backlashes to this administration come election time.

In 1990, the IRS took over a whorehouse in Las Vegas for tax evasion.
They ran it to recover back taxes.

They went broke.

They couldn't sell sex and whiskey!

In late 1940s they took over a race track from the Mafia, Wheeling, WVA for taxes.
They didn't last long.

the government is going to run them into hell. the only thing it is good at (and its not doing its job!) is to protect the country
