How to write poetry without sounding corny?

I don't want to be a famous poet or anything like that, but I'll be taking a poetry class soon and I really need some tips, because I suck.

I want to make it so that the poems don't sound corny and aren't too basic.

What are some tips?
 
poems dont have to rhyme. just write 2 lines at a time and read them over and make sure the have like a good "feel" to it. its kinda hard to explain.
