how to write good poetry?

Browse some of mine, and do something different because I don't have a clue.

I saw a sunbird flying
so high up in the sky
I saw a soaring falcon
a mere speck oh so high
I saw a Greenshank wading
and a Cormorant at play
But when I get my Winchester
I'll blow them all away.

Which I just wrote is a good example of what not to do.

first of all you need to expose yourself to all the good poetry that's out there and learn. learn from the masters [lol sounds so weird] and also learn the rules of each kind: the sonnets, the free verse, haiku, ballads, etc... then write your own. write your own remembering originally and put your feelings in it. a poem has not succeeded in being one if no emotion comes across to your readers.
