How to work out stressed and unstressed in poetry?

Hey, i'm a bit confused as to how to work out which syllables are stressed and those unstressed in poetry/words etc...

For example Trochee...i know the "Tro" is stressed and the "chee" unstressed from an example i've been given, but why? How do i tell? Is it which ever sound is more emphasised?(please explain in abit more detail though)
