How to Use Oven Mits?

I had oven mitts someone gave me, long ago. I found them
very cumbersome and kind of unweildy and stiff. I prefer
potholders where I feel like I have a much better feel of what
I'm picking up.

I have an entire drawer filled with hotpads... the top drawer closest
to the stove... mine are only on the counter while I'm cooking and
nearby. I can't leave hot pads unattended, I have a cat with the
uncanny knack of sniffing them out, they'll get hauled down to the
basement and stashed where they're never to be seen again.

I've toyed with the idea of the gloves, especially for tossing around
large chunks of meat on the smoker. But I still need something quick
to slip on at least one hand for the things in the oven.

Gee, when I looked within the last year they all seemed to be
those things with pockets, which I hate. The other trick is to
find ones that are just the right thickness--not too thin and not
so thick that they aren't adequately flexible. And the right
size. Gee, I'm picky.

Every site and store I've seen calls them mits (t's are in short
supply).

Take your pick:

Since I am usually in too much of a hurry to find my potholders (in the
bottom drawer), I usually use a (DRY) folded dish towel to remove stuff
from the oven. It usually works quite well for me.

I got a pair of fancy oven mitts made of silicone for Christmas.
Silicone is a wonderful, useful, space age material that is curiously
unsuitable when used in this application. The inside feels unpleasantly
moist and slippery most of the time and it surprisingly has a low
coefficient of friction because of it's propensity to retain an oil film
on it's surface. My guess is that it's thermo-insulating properties is
just so-so requiring a thick and clumsy thickness to it. All in all,
silicone oven mitts are a fail.

One day they'll make a great, comfortable, glove out of aerospace
materials that will allow one to literally put their hand in the fire -
hopefully someone will be thoughtful enough to fork one over to me for
Xmas. :-)

Of course I've tried it. There is no way I could pick up anything
with my hand in those. I even went to Walmart and Kohl's today and
tried another 50 pairs.

Your thumb is locked inside that sleeve. I'm not going to take
casserole dishes out of the oven if I can't move my thumb.

Anybody can try this just sitting there at their keyboard: Make a
flat palm and without moving your thumb away from your index finger
make the motions of taking a casserole (or "hot dish" if your prefer)
out of the oven.

It just doesn't work.
