how to use itemfinder in pokemon red for gameboy?

Ok, so here's the deal. I already have the itemfinder and when i use it, it says that there is an item nearby but for the love of me i dont know how to pick the dam thing up! i know there is a simple solution out there that i am just not getting so help please!?!?
 
ok so if the item finder goes off that means that the hidden item is somewhere in the screen that you used it (as far as you can see)
just try walking around pressing the "A" button in each spot until you find it.
 
When you use the Itemfinder it will direct you in the direction that the item is buried.

Let's just say that "X" stands for the trainer and "o" stands for the buried item. The trainer needs to stand in front of the item and press A to pick it up.

Trainer > X (no spaces between trainer and item) o < item.
