How to use images from computer in HTML?

I know that I need to use <img src="imagename.jpg"> but when I do that nothing happens. I've also tried putting in the whole path to the image, what am I missing? It works fine when I just put in a URL and use images from the internet but I can't get it to work with things saved on my computer.
