How to use a manual flash on a Nikon D60?

An old friend lent me a very old (and very heavy) Metz Mecablitz 34 BCT1 flash to use on my D60 (with kit lens 18-55 3.5-5.6), and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can use it effectively.

Don't get me wrong, the thing actually works and I can get some correct exposures from it, but I was wondering if anyone out there has any tips or tricks to use it. And also I don't have much experience with dedicated flashes either.

Can't really afford an SB flash unit right now so the Metz is gonna be it for the foreseeable future.

Also, is there any voltage issues I need to be aware of regarding the flash unit? I read from another question about a Vivitar 285 that might fry the circuits of a D60?

Thanks a bunch!
