How to upgrade my HTC T mobile G1 phone Operating System?

I bought new HTC T mobile G1 phone(Model No.:T mobile G, firmware version:1.5,baseband version:62.525.20.18H_2.22.20.23, kernel version:2.6.27-00392-g8312baf,build number:kila-user 1.5 CRB21 147201 ota-rel-keys release-keys, production team: www.hiapk.com ver 2.2 f). And it happens that am experiencing the following 2 problems:

1. Only 2G is working i.e 3G is not available and
2. Flash lights on the key board are not working i.e I can't use the key board in the dark.

Pls. somebody help!

You bought it new? If so, you need to return in where you purchased it and tell them about your problems.

If not, go into your "wireless & network settings" and then "mobile networks" and make sure that "use only 2G" is unchecked.

Also, go into you "sound and display" settings and adjust the display portion that may affect the backlight situation.

Hope this helps some.

Upgrading to 1.6 won't help you here. All versions of Android have 3G support (assuming it's a GSM phone, not a CDMA one) and illuminate the keyboard by default when buttons are pressed (if it has a keyboard).

For 3G to work, you need to be in an area that has 3G coverage from the network you're using. Does it? You also need to have "use only 2G" turned off as explained above.

There is an app called Dark Keys (or something like that) which was meant to keep the light turned off on certain phones (namely the white G1) as the backlight made the keys impossible to see. Have you installed something like this? Did you factory reset the phone before using it? Has the phone always had these problems are did some start later?

HIAPK is a Chinese Android Community Forum, a bit like ours. They have their own ROMs, a bit like how we have Cyanogen ROMs, that have simplified Chinese input and menu support (which Android was lacking in its early versions).

What you're seeing in the first post is a genuine copy of what is displayed on such phones that have the HIAPK ROM.

Somehow, I managed to completely miss all of that when I first replied. I'd still be surprised if it was the ROM at fault, as the stuff you're saying it not working is pretty hard to break by making a custom ROM. However, you do have a custom ROM installed that I'd never heard of before until yesterday, so if you don't need Simplified Chinese and as it could be at fault, I'd recommend installing the latest Cyanogen build by following these instructions http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
